Gyros, Souvlaki, Moussaka and More: Greek Food Explained
A plain English guide to the dishes on our Greek menu, and what to order on your first visit.

Greek food is built on a few simple ideas: meat seasoned well and cooked over a hot grill, vegetables and olive oil, slow dishes that take their time in the oven, and plenty of dips and bread to share. If the menu looks unfamiliar, here's what everything is.
Gyros
Gyros (in Greece it sounds more like "yeeros", but every way of saying it gets you fed here) is seasoned meat cooked slowly and carved into thin, crisp edged slices. Ours is chicken, marinated in house. It's the dish most people start with: wrapped in warm pitta with salad and tzatziki in our Chicken Gyros Wrap, piled onto seasoned rice in a rice bowl, or served as a platter with rice, salad, pitta and dips.
Souvlaki
Souvlaki means "little skewer". Where gyros is sliced, souvlaki is chunks of marinated meat threaded onto a skewer and grilled. Our Chicken Souvlaki Platter comes with rice, salad, pitta and dips, and souvlaki also goes into a rice bowl. If you like your chicken with a bit of char from the grill, this is your dish.
Koftas
Koftas are minced lamb mixed with herbs and spices, shaped and grilled. They're juicy, a little bit spiced and very good with garlic sauce. Try them in a Lamb Kofta Wrap, on a platter, or on our Hot Honey Lamb Loaded Fries.
Moussaka
The most famous Greek bake. Layers of aubergine and spiced lamb, topped with a thick, creamy béchamel and baked until golden. Our Traditional Homemade Moussaka is made the classic way, and there's a vegetable moussaka for anyone who doesn't eat meat.
Stifado
Stifado is a slow cooked stew of beef with whole baby onions, red wine and warm spices. It takes hours and it's worth it: the beef comes out soft enough to cut with a spoon. We also make a vegetable stifado in the same sauce.
Kleftiko
Kleftiko is lamb roasted very slowly with lemon, garlic and oregano until it falls off the bone. The story goes that the name comes from the klephts, mountain rebels who cooked their lamb sealed and hidden so the smoke wouldn't give them away. Whatever the history, it's the dish to order if you love lamb.
Halloumi and vegetarian dishes
Halloumi is a firm, salty cheese that holds its shape on the grill and goes golden on the outside. We use it in wraps, rice bowls, platters and loaded fries, so vegetarians get the full Greek grill experience. Add the vegetable moussaka, vegetable stifado, Greek salad and Mediterranean quinoa salad and there's plenty to choose from.
Tzatziki, hummus and the dips
Tzatziki is thick yoghurt with cucumber, garlic and herbs, cool against anything off the grill. Hummus is blended chickpeas with tahini and lemon. Order extra pitta and you can make a starter of them.
Greek desserts
Portokalopita is a Greek orange cake made with shredded filo and soaked in citrus syrup, served warm with vanilla ice cream. It's the dessert our regulars rave about. Baklava is layers of filo pastry, nuts and honey syrup. Both are a lovely way to finish.
What to order on your first visit
For one: the Mixed Grill Platter for One gives you a taste of everything from the grill. For two: share the Mixed Grill Platter for Two, add a Greek salad, and split a portokalopita afterwards. Not that hungry: a Chicken Gyros Wrap with fries. Slow food fan: moussaka or lamb kleftiko.
